This honey smoked chicken dish was introduced to me by my Aunt Yuki when we were children, and I’ve been a fan ever since.
Although the honey smoked chicken was originally prepared in the oven, it is much superior when prepared on the Big Green Egg. You’ll get a bit of that great smoke flavor when you cook it on the BGE!
Ingredients for Honey Smoked Chicken
- 1/3 cup – melted butter
- Honey, 1/3 cup
- 4 tblsp. Mustard (prepared)
- Curry Powder (1 teaspoon)
- 4-6 skinless chicken breasts per person
How Should Honey Smoked Chicken Be Prepared?
While you can create the marinade for the honey smoked chicken on the Big Green Egg, you can also make it in a cast iron pan on the stovetop and then move it to the egg, which is what I’ll be doing here because it’s winter in Michigan.
Begin by melting the butter in a cast iron pan for the honey smoked chicken.
Add the honey when the butter is nearly melted.
The mustard comes next.
The powdered curry comes last.
After carefully mixing all Ingredients in the cast iron pan, the honey smoked chicken marinade is complete.
Simply place the chicken in the cast iron pan after that.
Begin basting the chicken with the honey-based marinating sauce you just produced.
Continue basting the chicken with the sauce until it is evenly coated. Once they’re done, it’s time to smoke them on the Big Green Egg.
On the Big Green Egg, how do you make honey smoked chicken?
This delectable honey smoked chicken takes around 1 hour to cook on the Big Green Egg four. Preheat the BGE to 350°F and prepare for an indirect cook. With the feet facing up, insert the plate setter / convert”egg”tor in the BGE.
Simply baste the honey smoked chicken every 15 minutes while it’s cooking. When the chicken reaches a safe internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit, it may be removed.
The chicken is ready to be removed off the Big Green Egg or Kamado Joe and served after it has reached a minimum internal temperature of 165 degrees.
While the chicken is good on its own, it is also delicious served over rice, with the leftover marinade used as a lovely sauce on the chicken.
Garlic broccoli or green beans with chicken bouillon are also popular with this dish.

Deliciously juicy chicken with a dash of spice and a great honey taste. This is another one of those recipes where there is no way to go wrong.
- Skinless/boneless chicken breasts, 4-6 each
- a third cup Butter
- a third cup of honey
- 4 Teaspoons Mustard (Yellow)
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt (this can also be omitted)
- 1 tblsp. curry powder
- Set the temperature on the Big Green Egg (or Kamado Joe) to roughly 350 degrees. With the plate setter / conv”egg”tor oriented upward, this is an indirect cook.
- Warm the cast iron pan on the stovetop or on the Big Green Egg. Heat the butter until it is completely melted.
- Mix in remaining Ingredients (honey, mustard, salt & curry powder).
- Place the chicken in a cast iron pan and baste it until it is well coated.
- On the Big Green Egg, place the cast iron skillet with the chicken (which should be dialed into about 350 degrees).
- Cook the chicken for approximately an hour, basting it every 15 minutes. Pull the chicken after it reaches an internal temperature of 165 degrees, as recommended by the USDA for chicken.
Honey Smoked Chicken is fantastic on its own, but it’s also great served over freshly cooked white rice if you like rice. The residual sauce in the pan is also delicious served over rice as a gravy.
