Pizza is a family favorite in our home, and it was one of the reasons I decided to upgrade to the Big Green Egg. The children like helping to prepare their own pizza.

Because I wanted to keep things easy for the kids, this recipe is simply a pepperoni pizza. Before continuing, make sure to add your particular favorite toppings.

There are two crucial components for a good cook when preparing pizza on the BGE.

A successful BGE – Pizza starts with the cheese being added last. This will keep the rest of your toppings from burning while the crust bakes. Corn Flour comes in second. The pizza will not cling to the pizza peel as a result of this.


  • Tiseo’s Frozen Pizza Dough, or any other dough from a pizzeria/recipes/local shop
  • Prego Pizza Sauce or any other favored pizza sauce
  • Flour
  • Corn Flour
  • Toppings – Pepperoni, onion, jalapenos, bacon, mozzarella, and more.

How do you make pizza on the Big Green Egg?


Before preparing your pizza, always turn on the BGE. If you create your pizza and then place it on the pizza peel, it will cling and you will end up with a mess. Place your convEGGtor leg side down after the BGE is turned on.

Some videos and ways suggest doing it the other way around, however getting the BGE up to temperature is considerably more difficult in my experience.


Place your grill grate on the convEGGtor after that. This will enable air to pass between the pizza stone and the conveEGGtor, preventing the bottom of your pizza from burning before the top has finished cooking.


On the grate, place the pizza stone.


It’s time to start making the pizza while the BGE heats up to 600-700 degrees.

How do you make pizza for the BGE?


To keep things easy for our BGE, we’ll use Tiseo’s frozen pizza dough. There are numerous doughs available, and you can even acquire them from your local pizza business, but we like this approach for keeping things simple and clean with the kids.

Simply place it on the counter to thaw for 4-6 hours and it will be ready to use. Another option is to simply put it in the fridge for 24-48 hours to defrost.


To begin, lightly dust your baking mat with flour.


This package of dough will create two thin crust pizzas, so cut it in half with a knife.


Remove the extra flour off the mat by rubbing it into it.


Place the dough on the mat and begin rolling it out. You may also make your pizza by rotating the dough in a circle with your hands, but I think that using the roller is simpler and maintains the thickness of the dough more constant.


Simply roll it out until it’s roughly the size of your BGE pizza peel in all directions.


Sprinkle a thin layer of Corn Flour on the BGE pizza peel. This prevents the dough from sticking to the peel making it easier to slide onto the BGE.


This is a bit difficult to photograph, but this is the consistency you want on your BGE pizza peel.


Place the dough on the peel in a light layer. If you’re cooking with children, be sure they don’t press the dough down.

If this occurs, getting the pizza off the peel and onto the BGE will be tough.


A thin coating of pizza sauce is next applied. There are several sauces available, as well as instructions for making your own. Prego’s Pizza Sauce is one of my favorites.


You want the consistency of the pizza sauce to be like this. It will all level out as the pizza cooks on the BGE.


Toss in all of your favorite ingredients (this sample is basic due to being for the kids). This is also the time to add the onions, green peppers, and bacon pieces…


Add your favorite cheeses next. We prefer to use a 50/50 combination of Mozzarella and Italian blended cheese.


It’s all set to go on the BGE. Another alternative that we like is to add a little grated Parmesan cheese at this point.

BGE Pizza Cooking Instructions


Your egg should be around 600-700 degrees. Sprinkle a little Corn Flour on your pizza stone to help prevent it from sticking.


Place your pizza directly on the BGE. Allow it to cook for 4-5 minutes before testing for doneness. At 625 degrees, this pizza took 6 minutes to cook.

Due to the BGE becoming a bit hotter, the second pizza only took 4 1/2 minutes.


Pull the pizza from the oven, let it cool for a few minutes, and enjoy!
