These BGE – Baked Beans with Bacon are a must-try side dish for any chef! They create a delightful meal with a mildly smoked taste after smoking for approximately an hour in a cast iron pan.

If you’re also cooking the main meal on the BGE, just remove the Baked Beans after around an hour and place them in the oven at 200 degrees while you finish the main course.

Ingredients

  • Bush’s Baked Beans, 60 oz (Original Flavor)
  • Thick Bacon (1 pound)
  • 1 – Onion, yellow
  • Green Pepper No. 1
  • Ketchup (1 cup)
  • Brown sugar, 1 cup
  • 1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • Mustard, 1/4 teaspoon
  • Cast Iron Skillet (12′′ for the Big Green Egg Large)

Putting the BGE together

For the baked beans, we’ll just set the BGE to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Direct heat is used to cook the BGE – Baked Beans, with the cast iron pan put directly on the grate.

After each technique of preparation, have your cast iron skillet ready to incorporate all of the Ingredients. Add the Baked Beans first.

Use the thick sliced bacon near the end of the cook since it provides a lot of flavor. Simply fry all of the bacon, then break it up into little pieces and place it on top of the beans in the pan. Keep in mind: KEEP THE BACON GREASE.

Chop the green pepper and yellow or red onion.

Cook it in the bacon grease that is left over until it is done. Remove the oil with a slotted spatula and pour it to the beans to drain.

Toss everything else into the pan (brown sugar, mustard, ketchup, etc.).

Stir everything up and put it on the BGE.

Close the cover and place the beans on the BGE. Allow for an hour of cooking and simmering at 350 degrees. They’re ready to eat after that!

If you’re creating something else, just warm the oven to 200°F and move the baked beans from the BGE to the oven while you finish the main meal.

Instructions

  1. Add the beans to a cast iron skillet.
  2. Add the bacon to the cast iron skillet once it has been cooked (be sure to use the thick cut). Keep the bacon fat in the pan once it’s done.
  3. Cook until the chopped onion and green pepper are cooked in the heated bacon fat.
  4. Drain and discard the grease. Combine the onions, green pepper, and beans in a cast iron pan.
  5. Combine all of the remaining ingredients in the skillet and stir thoroughly.
  6. Preheat the Big Green Egg at 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  7. After an hour of smoking, pluck the cooked beans and enjoy!
